— The GritStreet Tradition —
Here’s an informative little video on the style of documentary street photography that I employ; a handheld, low light, no flash, no crop “straight” form of street photography which includes involvement and interaction with the subject. A sort of “Gonzo” style (Hunter S. Thompson) photojournalism. I own the Streetwise: Masters of 60s Photography (English and Spanish Edition) book, which is fantastic:
Ruth-Marion Baruch was an American documentary photographer remembered best for her series on the Black Panther Party. Baruch also created a series on the hippies of Haight-Ashbury.
As was mentioned in the video, Baruch was a “straight” photographer, i.e., a photographer who employs a minimalist approach to photography, using natural light with minimal post-processing. The work of Ruth-Marion Baruch serves as a fine example of GritStreet Photography. She actually took the time to get to know the people she photographed.
