I’m in the process of writing the text narrative for the May issue of Gravis. This will be the last issue in the three-part series, “Against Doctor’s Orders,” which covers the tragic story of a heroin addict known as “Shaggy.”
I’ve decided to move the section titled “Addicted to Hope,” which I was going to include in the May issue, into the July issue. It’s just too much to include in the May issue, as it’s already saturated with heavy intellectual, emotional, and moral content for the reader to grapple with.
In July, I’ll be starting a new three-part series that will focus on John Lee and his struggles with heroin addiction. This series will be titled, “Putting A Price On Heaven,” and it will dive into several philosophical and moral issues. John Lee is a deep thinker, and we spent much time discussing the nature of reality over the two years that I photographed his life.
“Addicted To Hope” is about how the treatment center industry drains families’ bank accounts and 401k’s on the mostly false “hope” of “recovery.” I have a slightly different perspective concerning treatment centers. From my perspective, jails and treatment centers are just two sides of the same coin. For the most part, the war on drugs is a business for dope dealers, jailhouses, and treatment centers.
