The power of the 24mm-28mm wide angle lens

Garry Winogrand was a master of the 28mm wide angle lens. His up-close work is legendary among street and documentary photographers worldwide. While there is a place for the 50mm and the 35mm in street photography, there is something special about a wide angle lens.

You can’t get shots like the one below with a 50mm, or even a 35mm. With the 28mm or a 24mm lens, you get so much more information to work with. However, there is a price to pay – you MUST get close!

The reason many people tend to stay away from wide angle work, is because the photographer MUST get close. This is also why people want to ask permission rather than taking candid captures. Not everyone is cut out for street photography.
